Big Ten Honors Bethke, Nuttycombe
03/05/2008 - MADISON, Wis.-

Brandon Bethke, a sophomore on the University of Wisconsin men’s track and field team, was named the Big Ten Conference Indoor Athlete of the Year and Athlete of the Championship, the league office announced today. Wisconsin’s Ed Nuttycombe was also honored, being named the Big Ten Indoor Coach of the Year.

Bethke, from Lake Forest, Calif., was one of only two double-event winners at the Big Ten championships. He won the 3,000 meters last Saturday and added the 5,000-meter title on Sunday. Bethke won the 3,000 meters in 8:10.80, kicking by Ohio State’s Jeff See (second in 8:11.69) and Minnesota’s Hassan Mead (third in 8:11.73) for the win. Wisconsin scored 18 points in the event behind Bethke’s win.
In the 5,000 meters, Wisconsin scored an impressive 25 points led by Bethke’s victory. Bethke kicked by most of the field over the last 200 meters to win in 14:23.84. Mead placed second in 14:26.63.

Nuttycombe, who earned his 20th Big Ten Coach of the Year award, led the Badgers to a record eighth-consecutive Big Ten indoor title last Sunday. Wisconsin scored 127 points to record a 25-point victory over second-place Purdue. Nuttycombe has swept the Big Ten indoor and outdoor coach of the year honors the last four years.

The Big Ten office also announced each team’s Sportsmanship Award winners. Peter Dykstra, a senior from Wilmette, Ill., earned the honor for the Badgers. Sportsmanship winners are student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, the student-athletes must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. Dykstra is now a candidate for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, as the conference office will honor one male and one female student-athlete from each institution at the end of the school year.
