Track and
Field athletes nee two (2) pairs of shoes: training
flats and racing spikes. There are a
variety of brands to choose from for both training flats and track
spikes. The main thing you need to do
is to find a vendor and communicate your needs. Basically, you need to tell the sales
person what level you are; a beginner, or an experienced track athlete. You also need to communicate what event(s)
you will probably participate in; sprints, hurdles, long and triple jumps,
high jump, pole vault, middle or long distance. When
purchasing track spike shoes, make sure you purchase 2 sets of spikes. One set
will come in the shoes. You will need
a set of 3/16 inch needle spikes
for all-weather tracks (like ours).
Most all-weather tracks require needle spikes. Make sure you 3/16 inch spikes are not cone
shaped as these will tear up the track and not be allowed to be used when
inspected by meet managers. You will
be using these spikes for all of your meets this year, except for one meet
(Foothill). The other set is 3/8 inch regular spikes for a dirt
track. Make sure that you get a spike
wrench with the track spike shoes.
Usually, a spike wrench will come with your track spikes. If they don’t, ask the sales person for a wrench You will
need a wrench to change your spikes and to tighten them when they are loose. Here are a few
vendors in the area: |
