Information For Parents

Do's and Don'ts for Parents - an article which talks about how parents are to treat and interact with their athletes. The moral of the story? Encourage - don't discourage, and be sure to not relive your youths through theirs!

Nutrition - this is important for both athletes and parents. Since - most of the time - athletes don't enjoy eating as healthily as they should, perhaps you, the parents, could help steer them in the right - and healthy - direction.

Uniforms and Equipment - since most parents don't trust their children with washing machines, information about washing and care is enclosed. Same link as for the athletes.

Racing Information

Racing Strategies and Rules - an excellent article put together by Coach Hagin.  In it, it deals with Pack running (running in groups), various racing strategies, racing tactics, how you deal with the finish, hills, turns and blind spots, as well as what you need to do on the day of a meet/race.  It's a good thing - don't forget to print it out and keep it under your pillow!

Racing Performance and Strategy - another handout from Coach Hagin.  It has some of the same information that can be found the article above, except this one has a bit more emphasis with your mental attitude.

Tactics and Strategy - (have you noticed a trend?) - an article from the Cross Country Journal - way back when from the July-August issue, 1984!  (This article is older than some of the freshmen!)

Getting Your Mind Racing - an article that gives tips on how your mind should be set on the day of a race.  Remember that racing is 90% mental, and 10% physical.

10 Rules for Building Teamwork - here's something that I, el Webmaster, typed up about three years ago during the Track season.  It's pretty good; hopefully you'll find something useful in it.

Information For Athletes

The Program - what exactly is cross country? Hopefully you can find the answers to some of your questions here. Also, learn about the coaching staff's philosophy about sports (in particular, this one). There is a lot of important foundation information to be read in this link - be sure to read it!

About El Toro Cross Country - order of events in the South Coast League, our home course, and how we score in cross country.

Do's and Don'ts for Beginning Runners - ten tips that all athletes should live by, experienced or not!

Performance Factors - a graphic which is pretty important. It allows you to analyze your performance by looking at several factors which can affect anyone's race.

Shoes - what every runner needs (and what most runners don't get right).

Nutrition - just like for the parents - you need to know that, indeed, what you eat will affect your races!

Lettering Policy - everyone wants to know about this one. Listed are the ONLY ways you can get lettered in Cross Country. No if's, and's, or but's.

Uniforms and Equipment - every athlete is responsible to keep track of what he's given from the school. Information about maintenance and care can be found here.

3 Variables of Distance Running - an excellent handout prepared by Coach Hagin that deals with the three principle factors that you must deal with in cross country (or any distance running): frequency, duration and intensity. Included is a nice little graphic that shows how these three factors play into the pre-season, and season, practices. Very interesting.
